What do the people at
Giant Steps have to say?
“Everyday the children surprise us. It’s these daily
surprises that inspire all that we do at Giant Steps.
Each day a new sense of expectation is the norm, and
combined with positive energy and belief in the
children, many a learning opportunity is created. Two
heads are better than one and the Giant Steps team
collaborates between the staff and families to ensure
new possibilities. This is what Giant Steps is all
about. “ Libby Maher, Early Learning Team
Leader.
“Giant Steps Sydney is unique. The children are given
every opportunity to achieve their full potential. The
environment is nurturing and caring and every attempt is
made to enhance the lives of the students and their
families. The staff endeavors to go far beyond helping
the children to communicate and play with their
siblings; their efforts give families hope for the
future. I am constantly amazed and inspired by the
dedication of the staff and their ability to contribute
so much to the lives of the students. “ Claire
Allen, Administrator.
“I
am pleased and proud to say that I have been a part of
the staff of Giant Steps since its beginnings.
The
first employees were in awe of those parents who,
against a number of obstacles, founded the school. They
replicated a program from Giant Steps in Montreal,
trained new staff, found a site and set up the
administration with such zeal and fervor that left
onlookers quite breathless. I have mixed emotions when I
think of those 12 initial students, - ranging from pure
terror, determination, amazement and of course lots of
laughs.
I
have special memories of that time including that of a
student who learnt to read words, but only if they were
delivered to him by a toy cable car run on an intricate
pulley system. I have watched the first group of
students grow into young men and women and it still
gives me a buzz to be greeted by them in the
playground. Giant Steps is a very exciting place to
work, with a staff who are enthusiastic and committed
and students who have such engaging personalities. There
are often times of challenge but there are always
surprises and rewards.” Heather Tyler,
